Welcome to Mickleover Carers' Group
Mike & Jane Smith found that they didn’t know who to approach when the young man they care for, started to continually act in an unacceptable manner. It was not until after six months that they found someone sympathetic to their cause, to find a solution. It was clear that Mickleover & surrounding areas needed a carers’ information / contact point. From this, the nucleus of Mickleover Carers' Group started to develop.
Mickleover Carers' Group was formed in July, 2010 to assist and support local carers in the community who had not been able to access carers’ information or, who were unaware of what carers’ support there was available in Derby. Many carers don’t even realise that they are carers. It could be a husband or a wife or a member of the family. The general rule is that the carer is looking after someone with a permanent or long term illness.
Our meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at 2:00pm at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church - Mickleover (Next to the garage). We offer a safe environment where carers can come along, have a chat over a cup of tea and have a break from their caring duties. Carers can become very isolated, so the group gives carers the opportunity to meet with other like minded carers, where carers can support each other, share their experiences and discuss openly, problems that they may be facing.
Should a carer want to discuss a personal issue, then a trained adviser is on hand, who will make arrangements to meet the carer in the comfort & privacy of their own home, to cover issues of benefit entitlement, carers’ individual assessment or carers breaks etc.
At meetings, members have the opportunity to learn more about what help & advice is available from agencies, private groups, food companies etc. Representaives from Age Uk, Disability Direct, Derby Carers' Association, Social Services, Wiltshire Farm Foods, Spirita, ReMap, NHS pct and Derby City Council have all afforded their time to give informative talks along with groups, related to caring for specific disabilities.
Mike & Jane sit on committees run by Derby City Council & NHS pct representing carers interests, for Engagement Planning and Derby Carers day.
Mike is an ardent supporter of the "Yellow Key" which he is hopeful of going nationwide one day. No matter where a carer sees this key, a carer can be assured of being signposted at the very least, to where they can resolve their caring needs.
Why don’t you came along to our next meeting and see how we might be able to help you. A warm welcome awaits and we promise that you will go away knowing something you didn’t know before.
